Today is Laetare Sunday: Today, the 4th Sunday in Lent, is also known as Laetare Sunday. Laetare gets its name from the first few words of the traditional entrance of the Mass of the Day, “Laetare Jerusalem” (Rejoice, O Jerusalem) from Isaiah 66:10. It is also known as “Mid-Lent”. The historic tradition on Laetare Sunday, is for there to be a relaxing from the normal rigors, and disciplines of Lent. Those who have them, Rose Colored Vestments and hangings, may be used in lieu of Purple. Rose is considered a lighter shade of color from Purple, therefore “symbolic of “lightening up” the restrictions of Lent. Traditionally, marriages that are banned during Lent, would be allowed on Laetare Sunday. Although, St. Andrew’s does not possess Rose Colored Vestments, Father Steve & Melanie, will provide “Rose Colored” beverages during the fellowship time following the 9:00 a.m. Mass today. Another name for Laetare Sunday, is “Mothering Sunday”. It would be on this day, the 4th Sunday in Lent, that one would visit their “Mother” Church – The Church in which one was Baptized, honoring one’s mother.
