Father Steve came to St. Andrew’s in June 2008 as an Ordained Deacon and was ordained as a Priest in June 2011. Fr. Steve is the Vicar (Priest-in-Charge) of Saint Andrew’s.

Father Steve has spent most of his life as a police officer and military person. In June 2004 after a 22 year career with the Maryland State Police, the last six of those years as a Sergeant; Fr. Steve retired from the State Police. After retiring in 2004 from the Maryland State Police as a Sergeant – Patrol Commander; Fr. Steve continued to work in law enforcement and served as the Chief of Police for Hancock, Maryland before taking a position in the Patrol Division with the Washington County Maryland Sheriff’s Office. In his position with the Sheriff’s Office, Fr. Steve worked as a School Resource Officer (Police Officer in the School) at Williamsport High School; where he interacted and mentored students on a daily basis. Fr. Steve retired from the Sheriff’s Office in 2011. Not wanting to allow many years of his law enforcement training/experience to fall away; Fr. Steve continues to work private investigations and is licensed by the Maryland State Police as a Private Investigator.

In 1998 Father Steve retired from the Air National Guard after 20 years serving with the 167th Airlift Wing (WVANG) Security Forces Squadron. Fr. Steve attended the U.S. Air Force Law Enforcement Academy in 1978.

After his ordination to the Diaconate in June 2006, Father Steve was assigned to the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, Braddock Heights, Maryland and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Sharpsburg, Maryland. Fr. Steve’s home parish is St. Thomas’ Hancock, Maryland.

Father Steve has an A.A. degree in Administration of Justice from Hagerstown Junior College (now Hagerstown Community College) and a B.S. degree in Sociology from Frostburg State University. Fr. Steve is a member of Alpha Kappa Delta, the Sociology Honor Society.

Fr. Steve is a “Son of the House”; graduating with his Master’s Degree in 2011 from Nashotah House Theological Seminary, Wisconsin.

Fr. Steve is married to Melanie who has been a registered nurse for over 36 years. Melanie works as a Recovery Room Nurse at the large regional hospital, Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown, Maryland. Melanie serves as a volunteer nurse in the Parish Nursing Program and actively volunteers with the outreach & mission ministry at St. Andrew’s.

Fr. Steve and Melanie are the proud parents of two boys; Rhett 33; Cade 28; and the proud grandparents of two beautiful grandsons (Liam Patrick McCarty & Evan James McCarty). Rhett has a Master’s Degree from the University of Maryland and works for the U.S. Department of Treasury. Rhett is married to Elizabeth. Elizabeth has 2 Master’s Degrees (University of Delaware & University of Maryland University College. Elizabeth is a biology/earth science teacher at Clear Spring High School. Rhett & Beth are the parents of Liam & Evan. Cade served in the United States Marine Corps and completed a tour tour of duty with his Marine unit in the Helmand Province of Southern Afghanistan from 2009 – 2010. Cade has his Bachelor of Science Degree from Frostburg State University in Politcal Science/Law and Society; and a Masters Degree in Homeland Security from the University of Maryland University College. Cade has also followed his father’s footsteps and is a Maryland State Trooper. Cade is married to Amanda. Amanda has a Bachelors Degree from University of Maryland Baltimore County, and is currently working on her Master’s Degree from University of Maryland Univerity College. Amanda is a project fund raising cordinator for Johns Hopkins Children’s Center Hospital in Baltimore City.

Father Steve is an avid motorcycle rider and owner of a Harley Davidson. Fr. Steve serves as the Chaplain for the local Williamsport Maryland Chapter of the Harley Owner’s Group (HOGS Chapter #1544). Fr. Steve is also an member of the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, Maryland Chapter II and serves as the chaplain for this group.

Fr. Steve and Melanie are into a daily physical fitness routine and spend part of each day inside a local fitness center doing a cardio/lifting workout. Fr. Steve is a certified personal trainer, and trains clients in personal physical fitness, and also teaches aerobic classes. Fr. Steve & Melanie studied the Marshall Arts together for many years and both rose to the rank of Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Outside the Church, Fr. Steve plays Bass & Acoustic Guitar for St. Andrew’s traveling band; “Nothing Else Matters”.

Fr. Steve’s other interests (besides riding his Harley) are golf; hunting; and marksmanship training.
